Free Support from Incredible Guest Experts with our SYT Learn Live Calls

We have had an incredible (and incredibly busy!) six months over here at Shift Your Thinking!  There has been a lineup of amazing experts on our SYT Learn live calls, one after the other, covering so many important topics when it comes to ADHD, dyslexia, learning differences, anxiety and more. Each expert left us with tips, insights and perspectives that have empowered, enlightened and encouraged! We feel so fortunate that all of these phenomenal people have been willing to share their time with us.

So….we wanted to provide a place for YOU to be able to easily see the wonderful topics that may intrigue you, to access their replays, and to purchase their books (note: by purchasing the books through these links, we will receive a small kickback from Amazon to help support Shift Your Thinking’s mission and programs).

Without further ado, check out some of our recent Guest Experts:
Expert #1: Julie Lythcott-Haims - Confessions of a Parenting Expert

Julie Lythcott-Haims is a New York Times bestselling Author, as well as a former Dean of Students at Stanford University. She is an advocate for students, as well as for helping parents to become aware of their experiences of overparenting.

Julie detailed five “confessions”, which were honest and transparent stories of life parenting her own two children at different stages of their lives, while also being parented at the same time by her own mother. She chronicled some of the “over-parenting” mistakes she has seen, and some of the learnings she has uncovered as a parent herself.

Expert #2: Kim John Payne - Simplicity Parenting Today

Kim John Payne, M.ED, has been a school counselor, adult educator, consultant, researcher, educator and a private family counselor for twenty seven years. He regularly gives key-note addresses at international conferences for educators, parents, and therapists and runs workshops and trainings around the world. He is the author of the bestselling book Simplicity Parenting.

Kim’s live call touched on a number of topics including rhythms, predictability, intuition, decluttering, media, boredom, anxiety, uncertainty, schedules, adult filters and more. And if you love some brain talk, he definitely jumped into some science-goodness about the amygdala, limbic system and basal ganglia and how they affect our behaviour and thought patterns.

Expert #3: Jonathan Mooney - Learning Differently (How your child can live, learn and thrive outside of the lines)

Jonathan Mooney is an award-winning advocate, speaker and author who has been featured in/on HBO, NPR, The New York Times, NBC, Fast company, and many other media outlets. He is focused on social change and advocacy and has founded a number of non-profit initiatives.

We were very fortunate to have Jonathan join us on an SYT Learn live call...and this Inclusion and Learning Activist was incredible. He wrapped up our call with this beautiful summary which will give you a sense of what this call was all about:

We need to evolve our approach and see differences, not deficits. The world needs all of the strengths, gifts and talents people offer, not despite their differences, but because of them.

Jonathan comes from a place of true understanding, as he himself has multiple diagnoses and struggles with anxiety and depression, he lived the experience firsthand of so many of the children in our lives. Jonathan shared three shifts we need to make towards differences.

Expert #4: Becky Ginger - Dyscalculia and Your Child

Becky Ginger was a TV director/producer who wanted to use her skills to help children who struggle with math and/or have dyscalculia. She has both dyslexia and dyscalculia herself and was able to create resources with these personal experiences. She is the founder of the websites Tables Fables and dyscalculia.me.

We were fortunate to have Becky Ginger as an expert where she not only shared resources she has created related to math and dyscalculia, but she had personal experiences to share as someone who has dyslexia and dyscalculia, and who has children with a mix of these learning differences as well. Becky likes to explain dyscalculia as “number dyslexia”, since dyslexia is often a better-understood learning difference.

More about Becky’s masterclass call can be found here.

Expert #5: Dr. Ross Greene - Creating a Partnership with Your Child

Dr. Greene is a clinical psychologist and bestselling author of Raising Human Beings and The Explosive Child, originator of Collaborative and Proactive Solutions and founder of the non-profit Lives in the Balance.
Dr. Greene provided us with some incredible strategies and insights that focussed on three different shifts with respect to challenging behaviours and problem solving. He talked about focussing on what the problems are that are causing behaviours in children, focusing on collaborative problem solving with our kids, as well as solving problems proactively not reactively.

Expert #6: The Childhood Collective - Is it just ADHD or something more?

The Childhood Collective is a group of three professional women, two psychologists and a speech-language pathologist, who provide tips and strategies and support to neurodiverse kids and their families.

ADHD is a diagnosis that is multi-layered. Like many learning differences, it will present in different ways in different people. We were absolutely thrilled to have two of the professionals from The Childhood Collective join us on SYT Learn for a live call on “Is it just ADHD or something more?”. Lori Long, a Psychologist, and Katie Severson, an SLP shared a wealth of information about ADHD and the co-occurring conditions (such as Specific Learning Disorders, Speech & Language Delays, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Anxiety & Depression).

More about The Childhood Collective’s masterclass call can be found here.

Expert #7: Seth Perler - Get Real about Executive Functions at Home

Seth Perler is a well-known executive function coach who specializes in helping neurodiverse learners with executive function skills. He is a former teacher and has years of hands-on experience working with struggling students.
Seth had so many gems to share as he discussed topics such as motivation, overwhelm, scaffolding, how to sustain attention, distractions and relationships. He did a wonderful job of sharing actionable advice that gave us tips that we can start using right now.

More about Seth Perler’s masterclass call can be found here.

Expert #8: Dawn Huebner - When Worry Makes Sense

Dr. Dawn Huebner is a Parent Coach and the author of 9 books for children including the bestseller, What to Do When You Worry Too Much, Outsmarting Worry, and Something Bad Happened. She has been featured on the TODAY Show, CNN.com, WebMD, TEDx, and is frequently interviewed by popular parenting magazines.

Dr. Huebner talked about our amygdala (our warning system, like a smoke alarm). This is an important part of our brain and it obviously has huge benefits to keeping us safe, but what we need to do is teach people how to respond more effectively to the amygdala alarm, how to change their relationship with fear and worry, how to understand anxiety better and to be supportive of anxiety, but not accommodate it.

More about Dawn’s masterclass call can be found here.
