You’ll be part of a global parent community that’s shifting the way the world sees learning differences.

Let’s face it. Parenting is hard enough. But parenting a child with

    SYT-Gif-2.gif

    The struggle is real!

    SYT-Parent-Struggle.png

Struggle #1: Nutritionists, Psychologists & Social Workers, oh my!

You’ve tried everything to help your child regulate their emotions and accommodate their learning challenges: dietary modifications, medications, supplements, occupational therapy and IEPs. But sometimes, you feel like you get stuck in this rut of trying to “fix” your kid or handle everything the “right” way. You’re a parent who’s just trying to understand, learn, and do what’s best for your child so they can succeed.

In the SYT Parent Community: We see the child behind the diagnosis, just like you.

We know it’s not easy to live up to expectations when few understand your daily parenting challenges. Our mission is to support you in celebrating your child’s neurodiversity and nurturing their abilities, so you can help them explore their incredible potential and build their self-esteem. By staying open to new ways of relating to your kid and being gentle with yourself in the process, you’ll be able to feel like you’re on the same team again and thrive as a family.

Struggle #2: You receive a lot of advice that makes you doubt your choices.

You’re tired of hearing that your child’s challenges are just a phase that’ll pass. Or being told that you need to “be firmer” when they act out like you should discipline their “quirky” away. Not to mention, the pushback you get from other parents and educators who think accommodating your child’s learning challenges with technology is “cheating”. With so many opinions in the pressure pot, it makes you wonder if you’re really making the right choices for your child.

In the SYT Parent Community: We acknowledge and respect that YOU know your kid best.

When you’re well-informed and have the right tools, you can communicate confidently with teachers, tutors, doctors, and other family members who need to be on the same page. You can help them understand how to accommodate your child’s needs instead of demanding that they learn the standardized way. The best part? When you become an advocate for your child, they’ll learn how to use their voice and be their own advocate when navigating a school system that often misunderstands them.

Struggle #3: Information overload has got you stuck and overwhelmed.

Some of us have a family history of learning challenges, so we aren’t surprised when our child’s assessment results come in. Some of us are blindsided when there isn’t a family history to make sense of it. But our response is always to educate ourselves, so we can educate our child and support them the way only a parent can. Books, podcasts, doctors, summits, you name it. The problem is, it isn’t always easy to separate the helpful from the “noise”.

In the SYT Parent Community: We bring trustworthy experts and curated research to YOU.

Why waste time or energy sifting through 670,890 Google results on your own? Access in-depth video and audio trainings in our 24/7 Member’s Library. Every month, a qualified expert takes us deep into their topic of expertise, so we can implement what we learn with our children. Plus, get an opportunity to participate in goal planning workshops and live coaching calls that give you that extra level of personalized support you crave.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I finally have a name for what my son is struggling with. The link from the worksheet was soooo helpful! This will make explaining what he needs to the school so much easier when it comes to discussing his accommodations in his IEP. Thanks again!

Help Your Child Thrive and Find Peace and Joy in Parenting Again

    jenn-evelyn-ann-112980-unsplash.jpg

We created the SYT Parent Membership Community

BECAUSE WE’RE TIRED OF CHILDREN BEING LABELED WITH A D: DISORDER, DEFICIT, DYSREGULATION, DISABILITY.

We only use one D word to describe these sensitive-souled, neurodiverse and creatively gifted kids we love: different (in an amazing, world-changing kind of way).

Did you know that according to the latest State of Learning Disabilities report by the National Center for Learning Disabilities, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has a learning challenge or attention issues like dyslexia and ADHD?

Or that according to Statistics Canada, between 2001 and 2006, learning challenges among Canadians aged 15 and over increased by almost 40%?

If your child struggles in school, it doesn’t mean they aren’t smart. It just means that they learn differently.

But despite the fact that these stats prove different is becoming the new normal, many of our children are still misunderstood and never celebrated for who they are.

As parents, we struggle to find the right support systems to help them thrive, all the while feeling alone in our daily challenges and unsure of how to cope with the stresses of parenting a child who doesn’t fit into the “normal” box.

This is where the SYT Parent Membership Community can help.

I discovered Shift Your Thinking just as I was trying to learn about my son’s dyslexia. I joined the Shift Your Thinking community and have found it to be positive, supportive, informative and helpful.

Meet Your Community Leaders, Susan & Sperry

    SYT-PMC-Leaders.jpeg

    shift-susan.jpeg

    Hi, I’m Susan Schenk

Co-Founder of Shift Your Thinking LD, CEO of Technology & Tools for Kids, Author of Beyond Ok: From Invisible to Invincible

As an Occupational Therapist who worked in the school setting for 20+ years, I found that parents and professionals still struggled to understand children with learning differences.

They’d resort to traditional methods and tools that caused learning gaps and a loss of self-esteem. And I could see what was happening because I had been one of these kids.

The demands to sit and listen, to learn a specific way, to remember what I learned in class...it frustrated me. And if I did work up the courage to ask for help, I was usually told to get back to work or that I should have been listening better.

Soon my anxiety and fear of failure paused my progress. I became invisible to avoid being asked to read out loud or answer questions in class. When I was

forced to complete an assignment I didn’t understand, I’d write down random answers or copy a friend’s work, just so I could feel the same as everyone else and survive.

Back then my status quo was “fight or flight” mode. From the moment I woke up until I stepped off the bus at the end of the day, I felt sick, tired and dizzy because of the pressure to perform at school.

It wasn’t until I removed the shame and limitations and replaced them with hope and abilities that things changed for me. And as a result, I was able to offer this shift in perspective and approach to my children, so they could learn their way and be their own advocates.

Learning differences allow children to think outside the box and move from ordinary to extraordinary thinking, but this potential is lost when we place kids that learn differently in a box.

So, I stepped out to start my own business Technology & Tools for Kids and wrote the book Beyond Ok: From Invisible to Invincible to document my story in hopes that my story and message would show other parents and children with learning differences that they’re not alone in their journey.

This journey led to our Shift Your Thinking LD Summit and here to our Parent Membership Community.

    Hi, I’m Sperry Bilyea

Co-Founder of Shift Your Thinking LD, CEO of Thrive by Design

I have three awesome kids who all have a diagnosis of some kind (LD, ADHD, GAD) including me, their mom! They’re creative, quirky, funny...and I wouldn’t have them any other way.

But because they didn’t fit the school system, not only did their confidence plummet — so did mine. I felt like I was failing them as a mother. The angry outbursts, dark thoughts, substitute teacher escapades and medication trials overwhelmed me.

I was an emotional wreck, riding a roller coaster of shame, guilt, sadness,

loneliness, anger, confusion and embarrassment. I knew I needed support, but I didn’t even know where to start.

I tried everything from traditional to alternative medical experts...social workers, nutritionists and meditation practices.

And it wasn’t until I found Susan Schenk that I got the answers I was searching for and the support I was desperate for.

Once I experienced Susan’s coaching, I realized the thing I had to change most was my perspective. I came to understand and appreciate my children’s differences. I found tools, strategies and approaches to fit them instead of fix them. And after learning calm ways to connect with my kids, I rediscovered joy in parenting again.

I brought my networking and conference skills forward to help create the Shift Your Thinking LD Summit. From there, Susan and I continue to serve and support parents as we head into our 4th Summit and this new Parent Membership Community.

Let Us Support You the Parent as You Support Your Child

    rosie-fraser-592594-unsplash.jpg

So many of us are searching for nonjudgmental support. Craving connection with parents like us who get it.

We read all the books, test different treatment options, get referred to umpteen specialists…

But there’s very little emotional support out there for us, the parents who are trying to support children with learning differences.

So, we built a private membership community where everyone who joined could get the benefits of ongoing support and expert education no matter where they lived — for as little as $14.99/month.

We know that when we accept different ways of learning, we can empower our kids. And as moms and dads, we have a powerful role to play when it comes to empowering our child.

Even though we don’t always feel strong or capable or ready to take on these challenges, it feels a lot easier when you’ve got access to reliable content and a community that gets it.

And that’s exactly why the SYT Parent Community exists.

I really enjoyed the presentations online. Enough to rewatch them. My greatest take away from SYT in general is that the whole community encourages a growth mindset for children and for parents.

    FAQs

+ DO YOU HAVE AN ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP?

Not at the moment. Your membership is $14.99/month.

+ CAN I CANCEL AT ANY TIME?

Yes, but we’ll be sad to see you go! If you cancel your membership, you won’t be charged for your next month.

    + IF I CANCEL, CAN I REJOIN?

Technically, yes. (And we’d love to have you back when you’re ready!) But because the SYT Parent Community only opens a few times a year, you’ll have to wait until we’re accepting new members again. Not only that, but the monthly membership fee you got when you joined may not be available anymore when you rejoin. As long as you don’t cancel your membership, even if membership fees go up at a later date, you’ll still pay the same amount as when you joined.

    + WHY ISN’T MEMBERSHIP OPEN YEAR-ROUND?

It’s important to us that we keep our community culture positive, engaged, and closely-knit. When you’re a new member, you get 4 days of our hands-on support to welcome you into our community and help you learn your way around. To preserve the culture of our community, we only open membership doors a few times a year.

+ DO THE MONTHLY TRAINING BUNDLES AND EXPERT TRAININGS COST EXTRA?

Nope! All your member trainings are included in the cost of your membership.

+ WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE IT TO A LIVE TRAINING OR COACHING CALL?

No worries! All of our guest expert trainings and Q + A calls are recorded and accessible in our expert content area, so you can go through the content anytime, anywhere.

+ IS THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP EXPERIENCE ONLINE?

Yes! This is an online membership community. Our members can join from all over the world. As long as you have an Internet connection, you can access the members-only community and our expert’s content inside the PMC.

+ DO YOU EVER HOLD IN-PERSON EVENTS?

We do! Our annual Shift Your Thinking LD Summit in Toronto. And if we’re hosting any future live events, our SYT Parent Community will be the first to hear about it!
